Betsy DeVos is a leader who has been fighting for years to see real change in the laws that affect the educational system of the United States. She has been called a reformer, entrepreneur, business woman, and a whole lot more but has more recently also become the Secretary of Education for the U.S.A. DeVos studied at Calvin College and earned her Bachelor of Arts in business economics during that time. She became very involved with politics on the campus in her college days and continued to be interested in politics afterwards.
Betsy DeVos served the state of Michigan as its chairman of the Michigan Republican Party for six years. She also worked with her husband, Dick DeVos, to help change some of the educational laws in her home state of Michigan. Over the years, through the Dick and Betsy DeVos Foundation, she has donated large sums of money to educational causes in Michigan and the rest of the United States. It was recently discovered that out of the millions of dollars she has donated to charitable causes, 25% of that money went towards educational causes.
Betsy DeVos serves on the board of the DeVos Institute for Arts Management at the Kennedy Center, Kids Hope USA, Mars Hill Bible Church, and many other charitable organizations or foundations. She does so to help people and to help improve educational offerings. DeVos has been hoping to see meaningful legislation get passed that diverts public funds so they can be used to pay for the tuition of children whose parents wish to see them in a private or charter school. In an interview, she talked about the fact that there are now close to a quarter million students who are able to attend a school of their family’s choosing thanks to the laws she has helped to push through.
Betsy DeVos has also acknowledged that the amount of students who are enrolled in educational choice programs will continue to grow. She has indicated that Florida has been a shining example of how all of the pieces of these kinds of programs fit together. After becoming the Secretary of Education for the U.S., she decided to take on a tour of the sunshine state where she visited many different schools. She surprised people when she made a special appearance with the rapper Pitbull and chose to do so in support of the charter schools he has started up.
