Dick Devos Role in Changing the American Education

Dick Devos is the husband to Betsy Devos, the secretary of education of the United States of America. While the Devos family may look like a normal family, they are used to criticism and a lot of attention. They are known as a family that contributes millions of money to charitable organizations as well as political donations. The two got married in the year 1989, and it’s estimated that they have contributed close to $140 million towards these causes. Before Betsy Devos became the secretary of Education, she used to be known for her role with the school choice program in the United States. The Politico recently obtained documents about the philanthropic life of Dick and Betsy Devos. In the papers from the Information Revenue Service, the two made a donation of $15 million in the year 2015. Out of this donation, it’s estimated that $5.3 went to political causes while the remaining amount went to charitable causes.

Most of their political donations go to the Republican Party with the two being members of the party since the 1980s. In the year 2006, Dick Devos tried the gubernatorial seat for the state of Michigan using the Republican Party. It has been reported that the two Devos come from a family of donors. Even their siblings and parents are well-known donors in the United States. As for Dick Devos, his father is Richard Devos Sr. who is one of the richest people in America. His father has an estimated wealth of close to $6 billion. On the other hand, Betsy Devos’ father is Edgar Prince, a well-known industrialist in North America and a generous donor. According to the papers obtained by the Politico, it’s estimated that the Devos family has spent a quarter of their wealth on philanthropy. Up to date, they have donated close to $1.33 billion.

It was also revealed that the two pay close attention to the education sector when it comes to making these donations. For instance, it was shown that $3 million of the $12 million went to education. Also, missions that support educational reforms in the US received $375,000. These two combined accounts for 29 percent of the money they gave to charitable organizations. Asked why they put a lot of emphasis on education, Betsy Devos declined to comment. On his part, Dick Devos said that they felt that the current education was underperforming. This meant that it could not help students realize the American dream. Despite criticism that they make these donations to conceal the large political donations, Dick Devos said that they have the interests of school going children at heart. The two usually involve their children in these activities. They explained that they had discussed the issue.
